The Student

Now I’m in the second half of the century of my life – yes I’ve hit 50 and now am 53. I’ve spent my whole life thinking I’m not the creative type more the left brain efficiency time. Being efficient is one of my better qualities. Need something organized, I’m the one to call.

But I’ve been inspired to try to become more right brain and develop the latent creativity of myself. I’ve been doing websites for over ten years but the creative part of the art has alluded me and I’ve been lucky in having clients who know what they want for colors, fonts, layouts. etc. So the Universe is now forcing me to find my own skills and stop getting by on others. Which brings me to the next chapter of myself.

Digital Photography

I’ve been very fortunate in this life to have the friendship of a truly unique, one-of-a-kind, highly creative woman. Lee Anne Morgan. Lee Anne is a true 21st century woman. We’ve known each other for over ten years primarily online and through our ups and downs she is still the woman I admire the most. I’ve been doing websites for her all this time and this has given me a peek into her life and her art. How I wish I had one tenth of her ability. I sincerely dedicate all my learning to her. Thank you Lee Anne.

So today – a beautiful sunny day here on Long Island. My first Sunday in many many months where I had free time to do whatever I wanted. So I took out all my materials from the New York Institute of Photography. I’ve enrolled in a beginner’s digital photograph class and began reading, listening to the cds (still have the dvd to watch) for my first project. Into the yard I went where I have already created the beginnings of a new garden. Our pool is now gone and we have the beginnings of a new sanctuary minus the huge blue walled creature which has sat in our yard for 15 years.

As I read my class materials and my camera guide I tried my hand at practice. The pictures here are my first attempts at understanding the manual while at the same time learning apperture and shutter speeds. After an hour Mother Nature decided I had enough of filming her creations and sent a thunderstorm our way. But I hope you view my photos (and critique if so desired) as I journey my way through my class.

Each time I have a chance to photograph I will post online. The first batch are the raw images I took. I took photos of the flame of the torches in my backyard. I was attempting to focus on the flame and blur the background; then I reversed it. With the flowers I tried mostly zooms but also lighting. The very bad attempt of lighting is quite interesting. Reminds me of floral wallpaper. In total I am rather proud of seeing my own home-grown flowers photographed – look pretty good! However, I can see I need to do some ‘dead-heading’ on some.
